QPM Energy has been actively working with regional mine operators to understand the available gas reserves and resources and to establish waste gas collection projects. These projects include short-term opportunities for collecting gas that is already being produced and flared and medium to longer-term opportunities for pre-drainage programs in line with future mine development.
The Safeguard Mechanism reforms provide strong financial incentives for coal mine operators to supply gas to QPM Energy’s infrastructure. Reforms require Australia’s 215 largest emitters to reduce baseline emissions by 4.9% per annum. QPM Energy’s waste gas collection activities will significantly reduce Queensland and Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.
This is a “win-win” situation for both the environment and QPM Energy, as the greenhouse gas emissions associated with metallurgical coal mining will be significantly reduced. At the same time, QPM Energy secures a reliable gas supply. Based on the work undertaken, QPM Energy is confident that sufficient gas resources are available to meet the needs of current customers and that there is enough capacity to supply other gas users in the region.
